Specializing in empowering moms of children with dyslexia. My passion is to foster confidence, capability, and community as you champion your child's educational journey.
Hi there! As a mom who raised a wonderful, successful son with dyslexia, I understand the worries and questions swirling around your mind, along with that uncertainty you're feeling. There were so many times I wished I had someone to guide me through the ups and downs of dyslexia—because, like you, I just didn't want to fail my child. I prayed a lot for guidance and wanted my son to grow up confident, ready to tackle whatever future he chose.
Just being trained in working with dyslexia was not enough. I spent countless nights researching, planning, and yes, praying. There were some hiccups along the way (just ask my son!), but each one taught me something valuable. While I’m trained and certified to teach and screen children with dyslexia, it was actually living through it that really opened my eyes and made me realize this is my calling. I felt called to stand up not just for my son, but for all the amazing dyslexic children out there who are misunderstood—even today, with all the resources we have.
Whether your child is in public school, private school, or learning at home, I hope this space feels like a haven for you. With about 20% of the population being dyslexic, know that you’re not alone—join this community where we celebrate the big and little wins while supporting each other through the challenges along the way.
Your child is wonderfully made by our Creator, and with His guidance we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us. Let's embark on this journey together.

Dyslexia
Screening
Are your child's struggles due to Dyslexia?
Our Dyslexia Screening is designed to assess whether your child fits the profile of dyslexia. By combining insights from a parent interview, evaluations of your child's schoolwork, and a comprehensive set of tests conducted either in-person or virtually, we provide a detailed report. This report outlines your child's performance on each assessment, indicates the severity of dyslexia, and offers a tailored list of recommended accommodations and interventions. We then provide a consultation session to go over the report and answer any questions and concerns.
Dawn is amazing! My son was reading on a Kindergarten/1st Grade level at the end of 3rd Grade After being diagnosed as dyslexic, he began the Barton tutoring program with Dawn Dawn made the program and reading fun! He completed the program and finally learned to read and write like his peers.
He made excellent grades in middle school, was inducted into the National Junior Honor Society and exited from his IEP at the end of 8th Grade. He is now in high school, taking Honors and AP classes and maintaining A's and B's. I feel certain that without Dawn's help, he would not have overcome his learning disability or be as successful. I highly recommend Dawn, you will not be disappointed!

My daughter began working with Dawn last Fall and I couldn't be happier with her progress. We happen to find Dawn through a recommendation from a teacher at Caldwell Academy. Dawn tested my daughter who was diagnosed officially with dyslexia. Dawn evaluated her and gave us a report with suggestions for her current school to implement. Her report was thorough and understood exactly what our daughter needed to help her to successful and confident. Dawn works with my schedule and is very accommodating. I am very happy with our experience overall and look forward to continuing our sessions.
This teacher Dawn is incredibly patient and knowledgeable, creating a supportive learning environment where I and my son feel comfortable asking questions and learning at his own pace. My son's grades have significantly improved thanks to her effective teaching methods and personalized approach. My son gained a much deeper understanding of the subject matter, and his confidence has grown immensely. Dawn has a unique ability to make complex concepts easy to understand, and consistently provides helpful and constructive feedback. She truly cares for the students.

Our family couldn't be more THANKFUL for Dawn Johnson (and her trusted partner, Gunner)! Dawn has evaluated my daughter and taught her for three years. During that time, my daughter's reading, spelling, and confidence greatly improved! Thank you Dawn (and GunBun) for giving Jordan the confidence to take on the hard and tackle it with graceful confidence!

What is involved in the private virtual tutoring sessions for children with dyslexia?
Our virtual tutoring sessions focus on personalized instruction to address your child's specific learning challenges. We use an evidence-based Orton-Gillingham approach to enhance literacy skills in a logical manner, boost your child's confidence, and foster a love for learning. The program we use is the Barton Spelling & Reading System. The duration of each lesson is 45 minutes.
What type of equipment would I need?
Although we are virtual, we engage our students by making this a very hands-on experience. All you will need is a strong internet connection, a personal computer (not a tablet) and a dry erase board. Your child will be manipulating tiles on a screen; therefore, initially a parent may need to be in attendance to help with navigating the screen.
Do you offer any other tutoring other than private one-on-one tutoring?
If a parent chooses to tutor their own child with the Barton Reading & Spelling system, Dawn will partner with the parent as a co-tutor, which may look different for every parent depending on their needs. Many times a parent will feel more comfortable in having Dawn Johnson teach the new teachings of each lesson and then parent will take over working on that specific lesson. Dawn's co-tutoring services may be used for reinforcement, review, or to even teach a lesson with the parent present if a parent gets stuck along the way. If this sounds like something you are interested in...just click any of the "Learn More" buttons.
How is a dyslexia screening conducted, and what will I learn from it?
Our dyslexia screenings involve a series of assessments and interviews to determine whether your child has dyslexia. You will receive a detailed report outlining their profile, performance on the assessments, and personalized recommendations for interventions and accommodations.
After clicking the "Learn More" button above and submitting your interest form, we will be in contact to determine if your child has enough signs to warrant this specific screening or if your child will benefit from a full educational evaluation administered by a psychologist.
Will this screening be enough to qualify my child for an IEP or 504 Plan?
No, this screening will not determine if your child qualifies for services in the Public School system.
Who will accept this screening report?
Most private schools will accept this dyslexia screening report to qualify a child in receiving accommodations and/or services. Please check with your school.
This screening will NOT be enough to qualify a child in receiving accommodations (504 PLAN) or services (IEP) in the PUBLIC SCHOOL.
If a child has been diagnosed with a Learning Disability in Language, this screening will determine if this learning disability is due to Dyslexia. It will include the severity level and the recommendations for accommodations and interventions which can be added to a child's school file to assist in creating their IEP or 504 Plan.
If you are a home educator, this report will help you to understand how your child learns and what curriculum would be best suited for your child, along with recommended accommodations you may want to administer in your teachings.
How do I know if your program is the right fit for our family?
We offer a complimentary consultation to discuss your specific needs and goals. This initial conversation helps us understand your family's unique situation and gives you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have about our approach and services.
